About me

My role as your personal physician and medical adviser is to help you make sound, evidence-based decisions about your health, avoid unnecessary interventions, and maintain a high quality of life even under intense work demands.

In 29 years in medicine, I have worked in Russia, South Africa, and the United States. My career began in general surgery and teaching at medical universities. In 2007, I moved to the United States, where I completed a family medicine residency at the University of Kentucky and then spent many years practicing in California.

The American healthcare system reinforced the principles that still guide my work: personal responsibility for every recommendation, continuing education, and critical evaluation of scientific evidence. My surgical experience helps me assess complex clinical situations quickly, while family medicine taught me to consider the consequences of medical decisions over many years.

I spent most of my career working in large clinics. In the United States, I cared for more than 2,000 patients and saw 20 people a day. This gave me broad clinical experience, but it also confirmed something essential: good medicine takes time. A system with strict time limits leaves little room for a physician to understand the details of a patient’s life.

This is how Oparin Medical came about. In my own practice, I deliberately limit the number of patients I care for. For me, this is the only way to know a person’s history thoroughly, stay in contact, and provide continuity of care.

Obesity treatment and metabolic health have a special place in my work. This interest is personal as well as professional: I have experienced excess weight, chronic stress, poor sleep, and the difficulty of changing long-standing habits. I know firsthand what lies behind my patients’ concerns and understand why the standard advice to “eat less and move more” does not work.

In 2022, I completed specialized training and received certification from the American Board of Lifestyle Medicine. In January 2023, the American Board of Obesity Medicine confirmed my certification. Today, evidence-based obesity treatment, lifestyle medicine, clinical lipidology, and reducing metabolic risk form the foundation of my practice.

My work rests on rigorous evidence-based medicine and complete financial transparency. I rely on high-quality research and assess how it applies to the individual. I recommend tests and treatment for a clear clinical purpose, weighing the evidence for their expected benefits and risks.

My income does not depend on the number of tests, procedures, or specialist referrals I recommend. You pay for my time and independent expertise. My goal is to protect you from overdiagnosis, financially motivated recommendations, and ineffective treatment.

Today, I provide telehealth consultations and ongoing medical care for adults and adolescents age 12 and older who are physically in California or Kentucky when receiving care. Consultations are available in English and Russian.
